UMNIZA MORIYA

The video work UMNIZA MORIYA follows a model entitled UMNIZA (Russian word for "smart alec") which Doreen Uhlig developed together with her grandmother: sitting across from each other, they remember sentences which they had said to each other often or had heard from each other often in the past. The situation is recorded at the same time by two facing cameras. Within an installative setting it is shown with two synchronized monitors. The work is shifting between familiar routines and its cuts, it shows tenderness and worries but also constrains that are involved.
Supported by the ARCUS scholarship of the prefecture Ibaraki Uhlig was able to realize UMNIZA MORIYA with 16 inhabitants from her place of residency - Moriya. Taking the more than 100 year history of the elementary school building which is now functioning as the atelier of ARCUS residents as a staring point, she has chosen the project participants out of the graduating class 1967. The nowadays 54 year old graduates are phrasing sentences from their shared past. Within a 16 channel video installation they are overlapping each other visually and acoustically and introduce the viewer to a kaleidoscope of biographies.
